The Provincial Medical Acupuncture Association is an association for health care professionals, including Medical Doctors, Naturopathic Doctors, Chiropractors, Dentists, Nurse Practitioners, Physiotherapists, and Massage Therapists, practicing acupuncture based upon current medical concepts of neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, and pathophysiology. Medical acupuncture may be defined as the stimulation of the peripheral nervous system through the insertion and stimulation of acupuncture needles in order to induce reflex neuromodulatory responses (sensory, motor, or autonomic) for therapeutic purposes of treating pain and dysfunction.
To become a registered member of the Provincial Medical Acupuncture Association, Inc. requires the candidate to have completed and received a diploma through a program of study from a recognized university-level acupuncture program that is accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. These accredited programs have stringent entrance and prerequisite requirements that meet the Provincial Medical Acupuncture Association’s standard. The currently approved programs are:
1. Contemporary Medical Acupuncture Program – McMaster University, Department of Anesthesia, Hamilton.
2. Clinical Acupuncture Certificate Program - Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, Toronto, Ontario
